The Crew

michael-brooksMichael Brooks, Publisher/Creative Director

As Publisher and Creative Director, Michael is the leader of this band of rebels encamped in South’s headquarters. Dumbstruck by the richness and vitality of the culture here, he moved to Savannah in 2005 with a mission: He would set about creating the ultimate guide to the people, places and happenings that form the unique fabric of modern southern life. Today, that idea has taken life through the pages of South. In only its first year of publication, the magazine has captured a strong and growing audience, doubling subscriptions and quadrupling newsstand sales since its inception. Of course, the seeds of this success were planted during the 90’s as Michael followed a determined journey from Ringling School of Art and Design graduate to freelance graphic designer to publisher of the award-winning Albany magazine based in his hometown of Albany, GA. Albany’s success brought Michael recognition, landing him a chair on the board of the Magazine Association of Georgia from 2000-2003 and numerous professional opportunities. Happily, he and his wife Frankie followed their hearts right to South. You can e-mail Michael at mb@thesouthmag.com

Lauren Hunsberger, Managing Editor

Six years ago Lauren Hunsberger left her hometown of Atlanta, made her way to the coast, and hasn’t looked back since. After exploring the many secrets of the Hostess City—good food, good style and good people, just to name a few—she found herself wanting to tell everyone she knew about the paradise she discovered. As South’s Managing Editor, Lauren now has her chance to share the joys of the South’s most eclectic and fun city while doing what she loves most—writing…. Bonnie Youngman, Art Director

While she still claims to be a Texan at heart, Bonnie Youngman fell in love with the Hostess City and moved to Savannah about a year ago after graduating from the University of Georgia with a BFA in graphic design. After trying her hand at book design with a publishing house, she’s since found her passion at South magazine where she revels in producing edgy page designs, planning fun fashion shoots, and working with some of the best Southern photographers and artists.

Moira Honeyman, Advertising Art Director

Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, interim art director Moira Honeyman has lived in Savannah for the past eight years. Formerly employed by Scuba Diving magazine as assistant art director, she is also a photographer with a passion for wildlife photography and has a degree in creative writing from Miami University (Ohio). An outdoor fanatic, Moira and her husband hiked the Grand Canyon from rim to rim this past October. To reach Moira, email her at moira@thesouthmag.com

Erin Wessling, Web Editor

Hailing from Denver, Colorado Erin Wessling has traveled all over the world, including Malaysia, Central America and Europe and has lived in New York City and Seoul, Korea before settling in the Hostess City. Inspired by the global perspectives traveling has afforded her, she’s come to the understanding that the world is too small not to be connected at all times. For over five years Erin has been writing about fashion, traveling and cultural diversity for various online and print publications, nationally and abroad. As a self admitted addict of social media and websites, Erin is constantly thinking of new ways to create and interact with her community both local and worldwide.
