Daily Blog: Lets Go Fly A Kite
Picture this: Kites fill my ocean view on the South shore of Tybee Island. Gliding and fluttering over the waves like giant butterflies, the silhouettes of the riders suspended from the multicolored kites were more like minature marionettes from my vantage point than the kiteboarding adrenaline junkies that orchestrated this strange symphony.
It was the first time I had ever seen kiteboarding. It looked amazing. Riding the wind and surfing the water at the same time. Powered by kites spanning fifteen feet in length a kiteboarder could launch himself on a wave, go airborne and achieve heights that could induce stomach clenching fear, or, on a glassy day, he could drop into a crouch and power across the ocean surface at high speed with nothing but wind, spray and a smile on his face. I am jealous and petrified all at the same time but nonetheless of I completely intrigued. From this site alone I know that this knew adrenaline based water sport is here to stay.

Art in the Sand
I don’t know about the rest of you, but as the cold weather creeps its way across the coast (much to my dismay as an outdoor addict), I’ll be taking every opportunity to get outside and enjoy the last few warm weekends on the beach! This weekend, I’ll be under an elegant tent located on the beautiful south beach of Tybee Island, as Tybee Arts Association hosts its annual Festival of Arts—and they’re inviting beach and art lovers alike to browse some outstanding collections of fine art created by a large and diverse group of regional painters, jewelry makers, photographers and other craftsmen.
Come rain or shine, judges will be announcing the winners of this year’s contest on Saturday morning as the festival—which is completely free and open to the public—begins. There will also be live music and entertainment and lots of culinary treats! But even if you can’t make it for the unveiling of the winning pieces, the collections will be on display from 10:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m. on Saturday and from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, so come sink your toes in the sand one more time as you feast your eyes on some top-notch southern art. And hurry, before the winter weather sets in!

Ahoy mateys! It’s Pirate Fest Time
With swords by their sides and treasure on their minds, beware as the Jack Sparrows and Davy Jones’ of Savannah once again take to the streets of Tybee Island this weekend for the 5th Annual Pirate Fest and Parade. And if you do dare to cross paths with these pirates and vagabonds, keep one eye open as they’re known to come out by the droves and stay out until the wee hours of the night.
One batch of wandering swashbucklers, however, will be making a special appearance at this year’s Pirate Fest.
Fresh off the tour ship, the nationally known Marshall Tucker Band will be docking at the Georgia coast for a one-evening only concert. Known for its blues-infused, southern rock, The Marshall Tucker Band has toured all over the world and will be headlining Saturday’s jam-packed entertainment schedule. Many other local and regional favorites, like the Eric Culberson Blues Band and The Train Wrecks also will be serenading festival-goers as they swagger in the sand.
But if it’s true treasure and gold you’re after, make sure your map out a proper costume. The costume contest is serious business at this festival and the judging will be held on Saturday (5:30 p.m. for pet costumes and 6:00 p.m. for adults). There’s also a very rewarding ($200 and a trophy) daylong scavenger hunt in store.
