The Wildest Jobs in the South

“When people find out what I do the two inevitable responses are: ‘You couldn’t pay me a million dollars to do that.’ Or, ‘That’s so cool!’ But it’s much more typical to hear the, ‘You couldn’t pay me enough’ response,” says Brady King. King is a professional rope-access widow washer who sometimes spends up to eight hours a day dangling above the city with a suction cup in one hand and squeegee in the other.

But that statement could have belonged to any of the professionals we interviewed to find out more about the South’s most adventurous, dangerous and killer jobs. Because whether they are seven stories above the ground or 70 feet below sea level, let’s face it, the competition is going to be pretty slim. For this issue, we talked with scuba divers who brave the Southern swamps to find fossils from millions of years ago and guys that scale 90-foot pine trees. To read all about these characters, pick up a copy of the April/Mary issue.

Lowcountry Staycations by Air, Land and Sea

Vacations have been synonymous with summertime since we were memorizing the alphabet and waiting for the bell to ring. Obviously, the time for a family trip was when schools were closed.

An “Evening of Artistry” at the Mansion

Last Thursday night, I had the pleasure of attending An Evening of Artistry that was put on by The Kessler Collection’s Savannah properties. I was treated to a tour of The Mansion, a dinner at 700 Drayton and some live music at Rocks on the Roof.

As I am new to town, this was all very exciting, but I would fully recommend checking out these locations to not only tourists but also locals. The Mansion is worth stopping in whether you are staying the night or not, simply to see the inspirational art and architecture. Every piece was selected for specific reasons by the owner of The Kessler Collection, and some were even found at flea markets in Paris. If you can swing it, ask for a tour from one of the staff so that you can learn all the fun facts about the place. Take the carpeting in the ballroom, for example—it was produced by the same company that made the carpeting for the Titanic.

After the tour, we had a quick mixology lesson by the bartender of Casimir’s Lounge. My favorite? The red, white and blue drink that celebrates the Mansion’s 125th anniversary and tastes like candy. Next, we went over to 700 Drayton for a few courses that were served alongside and paired with various pieces of art. This easy idea is perfect for you to do at home—choose a few pieces of art that can be paired with a few dishes, such as a picture of a volcano paired with a molten chocolate lava cake for dessert.

Once dinner was over, I was sufficiently stuffed full of delicious food, but we still had one more stop—drinks at Rocks on the Roof. This swanky bar has one of the best views of the river in town and is a relaxing place to sit outside once the weather stays consistently warm. What really made Rocks on the Roof special was the live music by Mike Korbar and the easy feeling of being with friends in a cool atmosphere.

Seven Artists You Need to Know

Art is everywhere, and especially in Savannah.

In fact, it’s hard to walk around the streets of our beloved city without bumping into some form of creative expression, be it a hand-woven bamboo rose from a craftsman on River Street or just the simple grandeur of a link of Spanish moss sashaying over a downtown square.

In honor of South magazine’s 7th anniversary (copper or wool are the appropriate gifts here, BTW, you can drop them by our offices on Bull Street), here are the stories of seven local artists who defy convention and help to re-define the true meaning of the word artist.
