Masterpiece Meals
Two of Savannah’s most seasoned chefs take their skills to a whole new canvas.
Two artists at the Telfair Museum’s Jepson Center work under a particularly challenging set of circumstances: Their paintbrushes are sharp and made of metal, their paints are perishable and from the earth, and they create their artwork every day, in a tiny, hot studio for a set of buyers with a seemingly insatiable hunger for their work. Their names are John Deaderick and Michael Pritchard, and together they’re the chefs behind Café Zeum.
Last year, when the Jepson Center decided to open up their in-museum cafe to outside restaurateurs, Pritchard and Deaderick were high on their culinary wish list and approached the pair with the idea. Evidenced by a cult like following at their other restaurant, the Starland Cafe, the chefs were comfortable with the lunchtime setting, but had their doubts about how they would fit into the museum environment. “We walked into the meeting just to see what they had to say,” Deaderick says. “For about an hour and a half, they described our business and our philosophy. It was a perfect fit.”

Check Your PULSE
The Telfair Museum and the City of Savannah have teamed up to create what is quite possibly the coolest free event Savannah has ever seen- Pulse: Art and Technology Festival. This 11-day event will explore the intersection of art and technology, featuring workshops, lectures, performances and installations from some of the brightest and most creative minds in the worlds of art, music, and technology.
Head to the Jepson Center to check out the high-tech installations, ranging from a musical wall sequencer that uses facial recognition software to allow participants to make music with their bodies, to a dream-like, interactive environment filled with strange robotic entities.

Two Weeks of Psychotronic Cinema
The Psychotronic Film Fest kicked off last night with a screening of Bone, a darkly funny, provocative and taboo-breaking 1970 film, shown by permission of the writer, director and producer, Larry Cohen.
This obscure film has quite the sordid history. Cohen shot the film, originally conceived as an exploration of race, gender, and stereotypes, in his own home on a tiny budget. At first lauded by critics, it nevertheless failed miserably with test audiences, so the movie’s distributor decided to edit and re-release it as both a grindhouse flick, Housewife, and then as a horror movie, Dial Rat for Terror. Since it was never intended to be either of those things, it continued to flop at the box office.

Gettin’ Shaggy With It
The Southern-born dance is half a century old, but still jumpin’ and jivin’ in the Lowcountry.
If you haven’t heard of shag dancing, one thing is for certain: You aren’t from the Carolinas. Shagging came into fashion in the 1950s after originating in and around Myrtle Beach with rebellious boys and girls in canvas shoes and bobby socks. It became the official state dance of South Carolina in 1984, and the state music is—you guessed it—beach music.
So how did the dance fever shimmy its way down to Savannah? By way of devoted Savannah Shag Club members Gloria Moak and her partner, Walter Purcell.
