Blick Art Materials Awards SCAD Student a Scion; $5K Scholarship to SCAD

Blick Art Materials, in partnership with Toyota Scion, awarded SCAD student Morgan Beem with a 2012 Toyota iQ Scion at a 2 p.m. ceremony today at their Savannah store, located at 318 West Broughton. Beem was selected out of over 85,000 entries in the nationwide contest.

The Unstoppable Appreciation of Diane Lane

It’s early evening on Halloween, but Diane Lane isn’t knocking on doors for treats. No, instead she’s looking up–at the ceiling of Jen Library on Broughton Street to be exact. “Wow, the ceiling is so beautiful,” she says of the exposed beams and florescent lights. She’s very perceptive and for a long moment she stands still among a small group of assistants and escorts to study the whole room before they usher her to the next.

SCAD’s Colleen Heine Presents at
This Week’s EPIC Conference

Colleen Heine is a woman of many talents. During her studies in graphic design at the University of Kansas, she took up the fiddle and a love of bluegrass and Americana music, now playing in local the Savannah band, The Accomplices. Music continued to be a large part of her life, as she went on to lead the non-profit Folk School of St. Louis for 7 years post-graduation. While this was her ideal job, “at the intersection of design, music and social impact,” Heine looked to SCAD and its programs to broaden her understanding of design as a tool for leadership and change.

What Will You Do with Your Public Space Today?

Some folks who live, work or play downtown were greeted with a pleasant surprise Friday as they strolled down Barnard or Bull Street or hunted for a parking space. Six teams of SCAD architecture students “rented” downtown parking spaces from 9 a.m. to noon and, instead of filling the space with a sedan or a pickup, set up public-use spaces that everyone could enjoy. Everything from lawn furniture to board games occupied the parking spaces, encouraging community participation and the reassessment of how we use our public space—sidewalks, streets, parking spaces, all of it—from the edge of one building to the next.
