Three Halloween Destinations to Die For

We all know that Savannah is famed to be America’s Most Haunted City, and while this might be a popular reason for folks to flock to our fine city, it may also be the reason you want out! If you’re searching for a few horrifying Halloween hotspots, check out these three gruesome getaways that are sure to scare you silly.

Hollywood’s Horrors: Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights in Orlando, Florida offers eight haunted houses, six scare zones and two live shows. Admission is $69.99 per person and with themes based on silver screen scares such as SAW, Chucky, The Wolfman and Fangoria this evil evening is guaranteed to have you checking the closet for monsters for months to come.
** Beware: This is for Halloween-lovers 13 and older only. For a slightly less terrifying evening try Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party.

Big City Scare-Fest: Las Vegas is a lecherous choice for those of the more sinful persuasion. On top of all their normally wicked ways, most hotels offer special spooky shows and host elaborate costume bashes during which they give away more than a quarter-million-dollars in cash for costume contest winners.

Hilton Head Concours d’Elegance & Motoring Festival

From the fast track to luxury lane, this is one auto party with something for everyone.

The Lowcountry is known for its big festivals, like Savannah’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration, but a Hilton Head event has been slowly and quietly growing into the largest of its kind on the East Coast. The Hilton Head Island Concours d’Elegance & Motoring Festival is a three-day event celebrating everything in the car world. “Unlike other races and shows, this one is unique because of its location in Savannah and Hilton Head Island,” says Bob Craig, former racer and now manager of the Savannah/Hilton Head Speed Classic. “That means whether you are a race fan, a vintage car enthusiast or someone who might only want to attend an event or two, all that Savannah and Hilton Head have to offer is also right at your fingertips as part of the whole package.”

The South’s Guide to: Keeping Your Cool

With her moss-drenched oaks and genteel hospitality, Savannah is the epitome of a Southern belle in her prime: sophisticated, full of charm and—at times—entirely too hot to handle. And not without reason. In these parts, late summer temperatures swelter at an average of 90 degrees, and humidity hovers around 80 percent, giving low country boil an entirely new meaning.

Not that we don’t love Savannah in spite of this flaw—we wouldn’t have her any other way. The city’s steamy climate is largely responsible for inspiring much of her architectural design. The majestic, wraparound porches and floor-to-ceiling windows in the city’s many antebellum mansions benefit more than just the eye.

Being thankful for these colloquial niceties may be easier said than done, particularly in these blistering months. Never fear: The South is here. Instead of wandering lost under the locust hum of another sweltering summer afternoon, why not pull over a chaise under the shade of the nearest oak and grab a chewy-iced sweet tea while we explore just a few of the hottest places to stay cool in Savannah.

Choose Your Own Adventure

For many people leading busy lives, juggling seemingly endless responsibilities and commitments, life has become as exciting as a Sunday tea party and a trip to the strip mall. Often the only source of adventure is deciding whether or not to watch Indiana Jones save the world on Netflix.

Yet, according to the Savannah Adventure Club (SAC) life doesn’t have to be so mundane. A cadre of 20-, 30- and 40-something Savannahians who (according to the group’s website) “just want to get out there, have some fun, and make some friends,” the SAC invites locals to ambitiously explore the lay of the land in the Lowcountry.
