Junk 2 Funk Pre- and Post-Show

It was standing room only at both shows of Savannah Arts Academy’s 4th annual Junk 2 Funk Fashion Show Saturday night. The show featured senior collections by Nikki Gasser, Brandon Sadler and Grant Flinn, models dressed as exotic Birds of Paradise, and SAA dancers. Unlike a typical fashion show where the clothing is fashioned from fabric, these creative student designs were made entirely from recyclable “junk” including door hinges and garbage bags, giving new meaning to taking out the trash.
As if the evening couldn’t have gotten any more exciting with the completely student-run production including pounding music compliments of SAA alum Phong Dang, stunning lighting and an exotic stage set, America’s Next Top Model judge, Miss J, was in the house, and expressed compliments for the designers and models.
Junk Jury panel included Heather Burge, owner of BleuBelle Boutique & Bridal; Mitchell Hall, Project Runway Season 6 Designer and South Magazine Fashion Editor; April Johnston, Project Runway All Star; Anthony Miller, Professor of Fashion at SCAD; Meghan Scoggins, Visual Arts Instructor at CE Williams Middle School for the Creative & Scientific Arts; Carmela Spinelli, Chair of Fashion & Accessary Design at SCAD; and Erin Wessling, Marketing Director of South Magazine.
Best of Show was awarded to Anna Hernandez for her dress “Laced,” modeled by Nathalie Avendano.

Halo Christmas Extravaganza
Halo Models and Talent Group held its third annual Christmas Extravaganza at the Hyatt Regency Sunday, December 11th. More than 60 local performers walked the runway, sang, danced and showcased their acting skills to a packed audience in the Regency Ballroom.
Making special guest appearances were Halo alumni Marshall Showalter, Karilena and Kline Barfield. Showalter, a 2010 graduate of Bible Baptist School, is currently working in Paris as a runway model and is the winner of the Perry Ellis Most Wanted Model Contest. The brother and sister team of Karilena and Kline Barfield recently returned from New York where they enjoy successful careers in modeling and acting. Karilena has appeared on Celebrity Ghost Stories on the Biography channel, and can be seen in a print ad for Claire’s Boutique. Kline has appeared in ads for J Crew, Time Warner, and Geiko.
Stephanie Duke-Andrews, Founder and Director of Halo Models & Talent Group, is a former New York model and actress. She worked for clients including Seventeen Magazine, Jockey Underwear and Jones New York. Stephanie is developing a program called “Girl Talk” to help young students see their true beauty and self-worth during the pressures of their teenage years.
