Movie Memories. Review: The Savannah Theatre

Hollywood1Ever wonder why those large tour buses are always lined up on Chippewa Square, unloading scores of blue-haired ladies and old gents with toothpicks in their mouths? It’s because these fine folk are seeing one of the best, all-encompassing shows in town.

The Savannah Theatre, one of the country’s oldest theaters and downtown’s former cinema, is an entertainment factory in the Savannah area churning out four to five live shows every year during its ten-month season. It also employs eight, full-time professional singers and dancers. Before the show, I slid into the lobby of the old building just in time to absorb the vintage interior and to learn of the theater’s rich history, which is on display in museum-like fashion.

Hollywood2The show playing this month is Hooray for Hollywood– a tip of the hat to the underscoring of the greatest movies ever made, from the beginning of cinema to today. With a five-piece band and a state-of-the-art light and sound system, I quickly realized this production is no rag-tag community theatre performance. For a unique night of entertainment, it is well worth the ticket price.

The Real Magic of Marc

He’s not some card-trickin’, wand-wavin’ backdoor magician: He’s Magic Marc, the most fun a kid can have in a hospital.

Though his step is brisk, his emotions are drained. Not because he’s leaving an auditorium of thousands as he once did when he opened for Bill Cosby and Aretha Franklin—and performed at private parties for Oprah—but rather because he has just left a hospital room. Marc Dunston, better known as Magic Marc, traded the celebrity life to bring healing to children who have forgotten how to smile. And he has no regrets.

With his bag of tricks and contagious exuberance, Marc makes his way to two very special, private shows. Despite the vibrant colors in his signature patchwork vest and the underwater art that decorates the hallways around him, the reality is that Marc is at Backus Children’s Hospital at Memorial Health University Medical Center.

Never, ever referred to as uptown, downtown Savannah has the distinction of being a National Historic Landmark District. And deep within her sprawling and untamed oaks, resides nearly anything one could ever want or desire.
