Savannah’s Comedy Scene
by Shawndra Russell
Last night I went to Ron White’s show and of course, he was hilarious. He had four glasses of scotch and ended his set with a true story about yachting with Dr. Phil and dislocating his shoulder in the process. Looking around at all the laughing faces, I wondered why Savannah’s comedy scene seems to be a little quiet and how we could get the crowd who comes out and pays good money to see shows like Ron White and Daniel Tosh at the Civic Center to also go to smaller venues booking less popular acts, too. White and Tosh had to start somewhere, right?
The past few years have been an awesome time for Savannah’s music scene. The addition of Savannah Stopover, Square Fest, and the rising recognition of many local acts means that any night of the week you can find quality live music in Savannah. Can the same growth happen for our comedy scene?
Absolutely. The Wormhole hosts a monthly comedy show every first Saturday, booked by Inside Joke Productions, one of the top booking agencies in the country, which gives them access to quality comedians that have performed on Comedy Central, The Tonight Show, and HBO. Screamin’ Mimis also hosts a comedy show twice a month.
Joe Shelby, who performs at The Wormhole’s October 6 comedy show, says, “All comics would love an appreciative, hip room, but a crappy show can be just as fun. I try not to take it too serious. If you’re not laughing at me, it’s alright, it probably means you just watch too much TV.” Shelby will be joined by Tony Boswell, who has performed on Comedy Central and in Meet the Parents.
Just like we appreciate the talent of musicians, artists, photographers, writers and other creative folks, comedians also need the love. Imagine a world without these comedy-minded people—no Daily Show, no Will Ferrell, no clever commercials or funny books or Sunday comics. No thanks!
