Cockspur Island Lighthouse receives Historical marker
September 16th, 2011 | Story by: Patrice Rogers
Through battles with treacherous hurricanes of the late 1800’s and a 30-hour Civil War bombardment, the Cockspur Island Lighthouse at Fort Pulaski received, a well deserved, historical marker. The Georgia Historical Society, with many friends and supporters gathered for a dedication ceremony and unveiled the marker Thursday Sept., 15.
After being destroyed and rebuilt in 1855 the Cockspur Island Lighthouse fulgor was extinguished in 1909 when shipping moved to the North end of the Savannah River. Yet and still this lighthouse holds great significance to Savannah history and with this distinction will forever be protected.
