Cavanaugh Lee’s Save as Draft
Natalie Lee, federal prosecutor by day. Cavanaugh Lee, book author by night. Wanting to keep her two lives separate Natalie Lee, penned her first book, Save as Draft, under her middle name Cavanaugh. Now with the recent release of Save as Draft on Feb. 1 under her belt, Lee spoke at this past weekend’s Savannah Book Festival.

Originally from San Francisco, Lee graduated from the UCLA School of Theater and moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. Lee lived in Los Angeles for about five years (under the Hollywood sign, no less), but eventually gave it up to go to law school, knowing she wanted to be a federal prosecutor. After living in Atlanta for a few years, Lee made her way down to the Hostess City about a year and a half ago.
Save as Draft is a modern-day romance displayed through emails, text messages and social media. The book was inspired by a broken engagement that occurred a few years ago. In the aftermath of the breakup, Lee sifted through old emails and realized a large portion of the relationship took place online, despite living with her then-fiancé. The most significant find was her email’s draft folder, which was filled with a lot of unsent emails containing some of the really important things that she should have said in the relationship, but didn’t, most likely out of fear. “The whole point of the book is that we don’t communicate any more,” said Lee, who turned down an agent wanting her to write the novel in a traditional format.
“This book was obviously very therapeutic,” said Lee, but her next book, which will be the sequel, will be more inspired by what she wants for her future. Despite the good reviews her book has already received, Lee does not plan on becoming a full-time writer. “I don’t anticipate quitting my day job any time so because A, I love it. I absolutely love it,” Lee said. “And B, if there’s one thing I learned in Hollywood, you don’t quit your day job.”
