Two Weeks of Psychotronic Cinema
The Psychotronic Film Fest kicked off last night with a screening of Bone, a darkly funny, provocative and taboo-breaking 1970 film, shown by permission of the writer, director and producer, Larry Cohen.
This obscure film has quite the sordid history. Cohen shot the film, originally conceived as an exploration of race, gender, and stereotypes, in his own home on a tiny budget. At first lauded by critics, it nevertheless failed miserably with test audiences, so the movie’s distributor decided to edit and re-release it as both a grindhouse flick, Housewife, and then as a horror movie, Dial Rat for Terror. Since it was never intended to be either of those things, it continued to flop at the box office.
Fortunately for us, the Psychotronic Film Society gave it a chance at redemption last night. There’s something about watching a film in public that seems more authentic than watching it on your couch at home. (And believe me, I’m a big fan of watching movies on my couch, as my DVD collection would attest.) The true movie experience is communal, and whether the movie is good or bad, it is enhanced by viewing it in the company of friends and strangers.
The intimate setting of the Sentient Bean is a great place for this event, and with movies every weeknight from now until next Friday, there’s something for everyone! In honor of the film fest, the Sentient Bean is selling organic popcorn, plus their usual range of delicious organic, fair trade drinks and food. Get there early so you can grab a drink and snack and snag a good seat. The Psychotronic Film Society is giving away door prizes that you will not want to miss. For instance, I am now the proud owner of The Impossible Kid, starring the world’s shortest adult actor and martial artist, Weng Weng. Each night after the film, head over to T. Rex Mex on Broughton St. for the after party, where moviegoers get great deals on food and drink with their ticket stubs. If you haven’t been to this newest addition to the downtown restaurant scene, this is the perfect time to try it. Order the shrimp and avocado quesadilla-you’ll thank me later.
