Choices: The Romeo and Juliet Story

awolClassics are, well, classic for a reason.  They address timeless, universal themes that people in any time, at any place, can relate to.  And what, I ask you, can be more relatable than being young, stupid, and in love?

All Walks of Life’s theater group, Act Up! is proving that some things never change with their hip-hop interpretation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.  “I’m excited about Romeo and Juliet because Shakespeare’s play is so universal that it can be adapted into any cultural setting or historical period,” says Lakesha Green, the show’s director. “Love is a universal theme and it will help introduce some of these kids to Shakespeare in a way that is much more accessible for them.”

AWOL’s Act Up! program is in its fifth year of inspiring and engaging young people in positive, creative activities during evening hours, when youth are statistically more likely to get into trouble.  The goal for this year’s show is to encourage youth to make good choices in life by examining the Shakespearean themes of love, family values, and consequences.  And since Shakespeare is part of the Georgia Education Standards, the youth participating in this play will no doubt have a leg up on their classmates.  Executive Director DaVena Jordan says the story “complements AWOL’s mission of violence prevention and positive youth development”.
Don’t miss this exciting re-interpretation of Shakespeare’s classic tale by a group of incredibly talented young people.
There will be two evening shows, on Feb. 5th and 6th at 8pm.  Tickets are $5 for youth and $20 for adults.
