Bringing History to Life

hank-aaronGeorgia Days are here again! The Georgia Historical Society has created an exciting lineup of events and programs for all ages, celebrating not only Georgia history, but also the life and accomplishments of Cairo, Georgia native, Jackie Robinson.

This Friday, don’t miss the Georgia Day Parade as thousands of costumed elementary school children march with a military color guard, musicians, local dignitaries, and costumed characters to commemorate the 1733 founding of Georgia. The parade will start at 10:20 am at Forsyth Park and head north on Bull St. all the way to City Hall. Whether you are a history buff or just love seeing thousands of adorable, anachronistically dressed children, you will not want to miss the spectacle!

trusteesSaturday, the Georgia Historical Society pulls out all the stops for their annual Birthday Bash and Awards Gala, “As Time Goes By,” at the Hyatt Regency. This year, the fundraiser will incorporate elements inspired by two of America’s signature pastimes, cinema and baseball, for a Casablanca-inspired night of cocktails, dinner, and dancing, as well as a raffle for classic cinema and baseball memorabilia. Ted Turner, CNN Founder and Chairman, Turner Enterprises, Inc. and legendary baseball player Hank Aaron will be inducted into the Georgia Trustees by Governor Sonny Perdue, followed by an entertaining discussion with these two accomplished Georgians.
