Photos, Prints and Silver Clouds: Andy Warhol

What better way to start of Halloween week than with the colorful and quirky Warhol exhibit, now at the SCAD Museum of Art. Some of his works are on display downstairs but the vast amount of them are upstairs in a room full of “silver clouds” that float up and down playfully as you check out the prints and photos.

Andy Warhol never ceases to amaze me with his vast array of work and this show really highlights all the different mediums he explored. His photographs are so captivating and I can’t believe he knew so many famous and interesting people. His work is so recognizable too, no matter what medium, which I think is an aspiration of all artists and not easily accomplished. The gallery is organized so that many of the brightly colored screenprints are juxtaposed against dozens of sort of washed out, individual portraits of friends and celebs. andy2

The pictures themselves are just simple snapshots with the subjects looking straight at the camera, often a series of five or more of the same person looking dead ahead at Warhol with just a slight variation in their facial expression. What’s so captivating about these pictures is that no matter who it is, they seem relaxed with Warhol and confident about their place in his world, if even for that moment. His work always makes me wonder more about him and his relationships with all of these different people and how they came into his life and became subjects in his work.

andy3It’s an eclectic mix of work and I’d expect nothing else from the great Andy. I recommend checking this exhibit out in the near future and there is some great music pumpin’ in the gallery as you walk about and ponder the work and prolific career of this artistic icon. Happy Halloween!

The Andy Warhol Exhibit will be available to the public until December 11. The SCAD Museum of art is open Monday to Friday 10-5, closed Saturday but open Sunday from 1-5pm.
