It was standing room only at both shows of Savannah Arts Academy’s 4th annual Junk 2 Funk Fashion Show Saturday night. The show featured senior collections by Nikki Gasser, Brandon Sadler and Grant Flinn, models dressed as exotic Birds of Paradise, and SAA dancers. Unlike a typical fashion show where the clothing is fashioned from fabric, these creative student designs were made entirely from recyclable “junk” including door hinges and garbage bags, giving new meaning to taking out the trash.

As if the evening couldn’t have gotten any more exciting with the completely student-run production including pounding music compliments of SAA alum Phong Dang, stunning lighting and an exotic stage set, America’s Next Top Model judge, Miss J, was in the house, and expressed compliments for the designers and models.

Junk Jury panel included Heather Burge, owner of BleuBelle Boutique & Bridal; Mitchell Hall, Project Runway Season 6 Designer and South Magazine Fashion Editor; April Johnston, Project Runway All Star; Anthony Miller, Professor of Fashion at SCAD; Meghan Scoggins, Visual Arts Instructor at CE Williams Middle School for the Creative & Scientific Arts; Carmela Spinelli, Chair of Fashion & Accessary Design at SCAD; and Erin Wessling, Marketing Director of South Magazine.

Best of Show was awarded to Anna Hernandez for her dress “Laced,” modeled by Nathalie Avendano.

The Savannah College of Art and Design had their 13th annual Scholarship Gala at the new SCAD Museum of Art on Saturday night. The Scholarship Gala is the primary fundraiser to support SCAD students who are in desperate need of financial support. Artwork created by SCAD students, faculty, alumni, staff and friends were all for sale at this exclusive event.
