Though the weather outside is frightful, your complexion doesn’t have to be. Consuming alcohol and sugary foods over the holidays, coupled with the onset of cold weather, can wreak havoc on your complexion, and leave skin looking dull and lifeless. Here are just a few of the ways to keep your complexion from catching a case of the winter blahs:

Drink Up. Hydration is the key to a radiant visage during cold weather months. Make sure you drink at least two quarts of filtered water each day.

Flax It. Unrefined, cold-pressed organic flax seed oil taken daily in supplement form, used daily on salads, or mixed into any dishes which do not require heating to high temperatures will make dry skin moist and supple. Barlean’s Organic Oils have beneficial flax blends for men and women. The Essential Woman formula is derived from seeds of botanical flowers such as special plant phytonutrients, all recognized for their beautifying and balancing qualities. Barlean’s The Essential Woman, Brighter Day, $14.95

Oil Faithful. If you don’t already use one, consider switching to an essential oil blend, or an oil-based serum, as your moisturizer. Most American women are lotion lovers, but stop any woman with amazing skin on the streets of any European metropolis and the chances are that she uses some blend of essential oils to hydrate her skin. Oils actually absorb more readily into the skin than creams, will not clog pores, and will leave skin with a healthy glow rather than appearing oily. Rodin Olio Lusso, SeeJane, seejaneshop.com $140

Cosmetic Cures. Be sure to use a primer, and avoid powder foundations. Not only will primers give your skin added moisture, but many primers also contain an SPF, which can simplify your routine and save you time when getting ready. Choose an oil-based liquid foundation that will help hydrate your skin while providing coverage to even out your skin tone resulting in a radiant complexion. Powder foundations absorb oil, accentuate dry patches, while settling into fine lines and wrinkles leaving your skin looking tired and dull. Youngblood Deep-Sea Liquid Mineral Foundation, Glow Medspa & Beauty Boutique, glowsavannah.com, $45; Waiting for Spa Bleu to get back to me with primer, Spa Bleu, spableu-sav.com

South magazine celebrated its 6th anniversary at the Jepson Center for the Arts Saturday night with a release party for its Feb/Mar issue featuring the arts. The city’s coolest crowd converged at the event and three levels of the museum were filled with hundreds of guests who were treated to dance performances, sketches and a fashion exhibit by Savannah Arts Academy students. The black tie affair brought out Savannah’s finest including platinum-selling country star Billy Currington and Project Runway All Star April Johnston. Dramatic red lighting illuminated the soaring marble walls and highlighted dancers posed on pedestals dressed in red and black tutus. Savannah Arts Academy award-winning designer Grant Flinn’s gown made entirely from recycled material was modeled by Carolynn Heebner. Guests enjoyed cuisine by Leoci’s, a flower sculpture of South’s mascot Mongo crafted by Savannah’s premier florist John Davis, and lively music courtesy First City Events’ most wanted dj Jeff Karr. Of course South had a fleet of photographers there to capture the event, so make sure to check out the many galleries!

After a year of planning and design, and a two-year, $26-million construction project, the new Savannah College of Art and Design Museum of Art opened its doors.

SCAD is known for acquiring and repurposing disused buildings—a practice they call “adaptive reuse.” Using this philosophy, the new museum integrated the ruins of an old freight house into the facility’s artistic, ultramodern architecture. “The building itself has actually risen from the ruins,” says Sam Anderson, the museum’s managing director. “There’s so much history and so much of Savannah encapsulated in these bricks.”

In 1853, the slaves of Hermitage Plantation, just south of Savannah, made the heavy Savannah gray brick that would soon become the 800-foot-long Central of Georgia Railroad freight house. The structure stood as part of the larger CG rail yard—now the location of the Georgia State Railroad Museum and the Savannah History Museum—at the corner of MLK and Turner Boulevards. It functioned as a rail depot until it was sold to Southern Railway and closed in 1963. It is the only antebellum rail yard in America still standing.

By the early 1990s, the old freight house was just a cluster of crumbling walls. The owner planned to level the site for commercial development. But fiercely committed to historic preservation, SCAD and other partners stepped in and secured a stop order through the courts. The freight house, by then resembling a bombed-out building from World War II, remained for decades, protected by law.

While the freight house ruins languished in the elements, the first SCAD Museum of Art opened in 2002. It was housed entirely in the beautiful 1856 Greek revival structure, due east on MLK Boulevard. The building was once home to the administrative offices of the CG Railroad. The stately edifice provided about 17,000 square feet of space for the nascent gallery, but much more was needed.

Dr. Pamela Gallup, M.D., is a board-certified gynecologist at Provident OB/GYN Associates. In discussing common ailments and prevention, Gallup says there are conditions that cannot be prevented, such as breast cancer. However, early detection can prevent complications and death.

15 Don’t wait. Self breast examinations and regular mammograms are critical to early detection. “It’s crazy not to examine yourself, and get mammograms starting at 40,” says Gallup.

16 Get checked. Certain high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) types have been identified as the first-ever solely infectious cause of human cancer. Cervical cancer has but one cause: HPV. Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women ages 20-39. Cervical cancer causes about 288,000 deaths each year. “Smoking has a huge effect on cervical cancer because it’s synergistic with that virus,” says Gallup.

17 Girls and boys, ages 9 to 26, should receive the vaccine. “One of the best ways for young girls to protect themselves is not to sleep with boys who haven’t had the vaccine,” she says. While condoms are always recommended, they are not terribly effective against the spread of HPV. HPV is transmitted by touch. It does not require actual intercourse of any kind to spread.

18 Avoid alcohol and drug use that can often lead to bad sexual decisions. HPV is also connected to vaginal and vulvar cancer in women, and rectal cancer in both women and men.

19 Take precautions when pregnant. Smoking can cause low birth weights in infants and reduces the placenta, which in turn reduces the amount of oxygen to the fetus. Low birth weight puts babies at great risk of illness and death.

20 Don’t drink a drop of alcohol when pregnant. Alcohol during pregnancy can cause fetal alcohol syndrome. Fetal alcohol syndrome causes cranial disfigurement, and cognitive and mobility problems. “There are a lot of people who are under the impression that just a little bit of alcohol is okay,” she says. “That has been proven not to be the case. There is no threshold for alcohol in causing fetal alcohol syndrome.”

The place to be Friday night in Savannah was the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist for Savannah Philharmonic’s Holiday Pops concert. An audience of all ages sold out the packed show featuring not only the orchestra and chorus, but also Irish folk singer Harry O’Donoghue.

Huge wreaths hung on each column, supporting the soaring ceilings of the historic cathedral. One might have thought Santa was arriving a week early with all the excitement filling the air before the show. “I worked with the Symphony Society of Savannah in the 1970s, so I’ve had a lot of years of music in my life,” said Herb Windom, a 43 year resident of Savannah. “This show should be really nice tonight.”

Mr. Windom’s prediction was just the tip of the iceberg. Peter Shannon, artistic director and conductor, started the concert with a Christmas festival sing a long, a medley of favorites like “Joy to the World,” “The First Noel,“ and “Jingle Bells.” Shannon joked with the audience, encouraging us to sing no matter what our vocal talent was…or was not. Maybe it was the music or just the festivity of the evening, but everyone around me sounded great.
The variety continued with instrumental selections from Humperdinck’s “Hansel & Gretel,” to the best loved whimsy of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker favorites, “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy,” “Trepak,” and “Dance of the Mirlitons.”

But then, a gentle casualness washed over us when Harry O’Donoghue took the stage. Strumming his guitar and sharing in his soft Irish brogue his childhood memories of Christmases in Ireland, O’Donoghue created an intimate, almost fireside setting in the great, regal halls of the cathedral.
From the majestic sounds of Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus” and the drama of “Carol of the Bells” to the fanciful “March of the Toys” from Babes in Toyland, it didn’t matter what had happened to us at work today, or how bad the traffic was, we were all gathered in the magnificent confines of the cathedral, letting the music of Christmas carry us away into the holiday spirit.

Dr. Dan Fisher, D.C., and wife, Dr. Sarah Fisher, D.C., have the Sciatica & Disc Center in Savannah. Common spinal ailments are often preventable. Dr. Dan Fisher says sedentary jobs are some of the worst culprits when it comes to chronic back ailments. But it’s not the only reason people get back problems. He makes these recommendations:

11 Bend with your knees. When lifting, bend at your knees not at your back.

12 When carrying something, or if you already have low back pain, avoid twisting. Pivot with your feet not your back.

13 Avoid prolonged sitting (no more than 20 minutes at a time). Get up for a minute or two and move around. “I try to get people to move their printers away from their computers to get them out of their chairs more often,” he says.

14 Learn exercises that bring relief. Some simple, no-stress exercises are available that alleviate pain and improve posture.

Pick up a copy of South’s Health and Wellness Issue on newsstands now for a complete listing of the 79 Ways to Prevent Disease article.

Tips from SCAD’s cross country and track head coach, Michael Sergi, for the week before the 2nd Annual Savannah Reindeer Run/Walk 8K, which benefits the Rape Crisis Center this Saturday at the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center on Hutchinson Island:

Your training is done. There is no one workout that you can do the week of the race that will increase your performance or readiness for Saturday. The goal this week is to be as fresh as possible.

Do not try anything new this week that you’ve not already experimented with during your training.

Shoes: Do not race in a new pair of shoes. It takes a number of training runs to break in shoes and to avoid blisters.

Nutrition: This is not the week to begin experimenting with a new diet. Hydrate well, include complex carbohydrates like pasta and stay away from foods and beverages that can cause you discomfort during your race like fried foods and soda.

Sleep: Get to bed early a few days out from the race. Wake-up early on race day.

Race Day: Have your race day attire laid out and ready to go the morning of.

Warm-up: Keep in mind that if you’ve been used to running 5ks that you’ll be running nearly 2 more miles in the 8k. If this is your first shot at a longer race you can build your warm-up into your race. If you’re ready to run a fast time at a new and challenging distance make sure to warm-up properly. Jog or walk briskly for 10 minutes about 30 minutes before the race, stretch and hydrate.
