Update: McGladrey Classic

For all you golf fanatics out there who haven’t had the time to keep up, here’s the updates so far for the McGladrey Classic that took place last week at the Sea Island Golf Club. Not only did Heath Slocum sink a 60-foot putt on the 16th hole of the McGladrey Classic to pick up the win of the inaugural tournament, he also picked up his fourth PGA Tour title. Finishing at 14-under-par with 266 total strokes, Slocum had a gaggle of close followers. Bill Haas finished second at 13-under-par, while Robert Allenby, Arjun Atwal and David Toms all tied for third at 12-under-par.

Film Fest Friday: Panel Pandamonia

Usually waiting in a line for hours in Savannah means standing outside Mrs. Wilkes on a Sunday at noon. But if you’re on Broughton waiting in a line for hours this time of year, it can only mean one thing: tickets have gone on sale for the Savannah Film Festival.

Do You Facebook on the First Date?

Have you ever been on a first date where the other person let their enthusiasm get the best of them? Things seemed to be going great, the chemistry was good, and then all of the sudden your date skips a couple of steps and starts talking about meeting his parents or what the two of you should name your three children.

Say it with me: awkward! Immediate buzzkill.

Yeasayer & Washed Out at Trustees Theatre

Having once lived in Atlanta, after relocating to Savannah, there is nothing more that I miss than concerts. Wagatail Productions’ Ben Baruch is hoping to change that by bringing Yeasayer, one of decades biggest indie bands, to SCAD’s Trustees Theatre. I went into Trustees pining desperately for a return to my beloved downtown Atlanta area. I did not leave disappointed.

Take Five, Headlines from Jesse Blanco

1) Why are Pirates always cranky?  Because they ARRRRGGGGHHHHHHH!

Right on the heels of a wonderful Oktoberfest celebration on River Street comes Tybee Island’s Pirate Fest 2010.  Now I could go on some babbling semi-creative stream of consciousness rant about Maidens and Shivering Timbers and the finest ales, fruits and cheeses but I won’t.  Not this time anyway.  Pirate Fest on Tybee Island is a very good time that gets better and better every year.

1. Whose problem is it anyway? City loses lawsuit over cost overruns in Ellis Square parking project.

At issue…what did they know and when did they know it? The meat and potatoes in this case are simple. City agrees to a price on the construction of a parking garage at Ellis Square. Firm that will build garage agrees as well. I’m sure in projects of this size there are ALWAYS cost overruns. My understanding is the city budgeted for some of those as well. Well, the firm doing the building claims the soil was something different than they anticipated. Call me crazy, but if I make a living digging five-story deep holes and filling them with parking garages, then I should know a few things about soil. Isn’t there an app for that or something? Seriously, testing should have been done. I am sure it was done. Why is it the city’s fault if something wasn’t what YOU thought it was? I’m foggy on that one. Can someone explain to me? Maybe…just maybe…it was the Troup County home cooking in court. Price tag? 16 million tax payer dollars. Appeal is being discussed.

1) We’ve come a long way since the Slip-n-Slide! Savannah is getting itself a water park.

Long overdue if you ask me.  The location is ideal.  Until now, anyone looking for summer time water fun has had to drive to Tybee, Splash in the ‘Boro or Summer Waves down on Jekyll Island.  This project has the potential to be huge for our area.  Besides the jobs and the continued development of our area, this park will be a welcomed addition to the ‘dog days of summer’ next year.

Swingin’ for a Cause

Now that the Southern heat and humidity has hopefully taken it’s break for the year, golf can resume in full swing. As if in celebration, tournaments have been scheduled throughout September and October in the Southeastern region. Many of these tournaments are also all about raising money for charity. You can play, sponsor holes or watch your favorite pro golfers, all while contributing to a great cause.

Blog: Take Five, Headlines from Jesse Blanco

1. X may mark the spot in the Coastal Empire. X-Men movie looking to shoot in or around Savannah.

The buzz has been buzzing for quite some time about the latest “X-Men” Motion picture shooting in our area. Locations have been scouted, researched, offers have been made, negotiations and rumors swirl like Kristi Yamaguchi after drinking five Red Bulls, but nothing is official yet. Why? Well, apparently there are a lot of details and planning that go into a mega-motion picture (who’da thunk it?). Define mega? The X-Men series to date has generated a box office revenue of a billion (yes B) and a half dollars. That’s a lot of popcorn. Well, maybe not that much considering what they charge for popcorn at the movies now days. Regardless, the players involved locally are hopeful we land this tuna and add it to our motion picture resume. One doesn’t exactly think of Coastal Georgia being a prime place for a sci-fi flick, but what do I know? I’m still afraid to put my digital camera through the X-ray machine at the airport for fear it will spoil my pictures.
